  1. The video disc is a new form of 
  2. VIDEO_CASSETTE that has pictures and sounds
  3. recorded on it that are played back by laser
  4. on a laser disc player. The video disc is a
  5. type of compact disc which was originated by
  6. Scottish inventor John Logie Baird in 1928,
  7. become commercially available from 1978 and
  8. is chiefly used to provide commercial films
  9. for private viewing, although even in 1996
  10. laser disc players are still uncommon in the
  11. home. Most laser disc systems use a 30cm 
  12. (12in) rotating vinyl disc coated with 
  13. reflective material. 
  14. Laser scanning recovers pictures and sound
  15. signals from the surface where they are
  16. recorded as a spiral of microscopic pits.
