The video disc is a new form of
VIDEO_CASSETTE that has pictures and sounds
recorded on it that are played back by laser
on a laser disc player. The video disc is a
type of compact disc which was originated by
Scottish inventor John Logie Baird in 1928,
become commercially available from 1978 and
is chiefly used to provide commercial films
for private viewing, although even in 1996
laser disc players are still uncommon in the
home. Most laser disc systems use a 30cm
(12in) rotating vinyl disc coated with
reflective material.
Laser scanning recovers pictures and sound
signals from the surface where they are
recorded as a spiral of microscopic pits.
